Horseshoe Bay to Langdale: the ferry to Sechelt

The Sunshine Coast is a peninsula, and the car ferry from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver ends at Langdale. BC Ferries schedules the crossing at 40 minutes. From Langdale you continue to Sechelt along Highway 101, about 30 minutes by car. There is no ferry that lands in Sechelt itself.

Vehicles can travel without a booking if they arrive and wait for space, and a sold-out reservation list does not always mean a full ship. If you plan to join a Sunshine Coast tour from Vancouver or on the coast, build the crossing and the drive into your day. The guide to getting to Roberts Creek covers the same crossing from the Roberts Creek side.

Our pick: Howe Sound by boat

If you spend a day in Vancouver before the ferry from Horseshoe Bay, this boat trip is a short way to see Howe Sound first. It starts in Vancouver, not at the ferry terminal.

At the Horseshoe Bay terminal

Vehicles with a booking check in 60 to 30 minutes before departure. Without a booking, ticket sales close 10 minutes before the scheduled sailing. Vehicles with low ground clearance or a long rear overhang can be moved to a later sailing at extreme tides.

Parking at Horseshoe Bay is charged. Long-term parking costs CAD 11 for 6 hours, CAD 14 for 12 hours and CAD 19.25 per day. Short-term parking costs CAD 3 per hour or CAD 23.25 per day. Payments through the app can carry a service fee.

From 3 to 23 February 2027, Langdale berth 1 is closed for construction. Sailings then use berth 2 with one vehicle deck, at times with two ships, and there is little space for vehicles without a booking. If you travel in that window, reserve ahead.

Vancouver to Sechelt without a car

Walk on at Horseshoe Bay and take the bus at Langdale.

Sunshine Coast Transit route 90 connects the Langdale ferry terminal with Gibsons, Davis Bay and the Cowrie Street stop in Sechelt. A trip takes about 40 to 50 minutes depending on the run, and some trips use North Road. A weekday example leaves Langdale at 06:00 and reaches Sechelt at 06:38. Treat that as an example, not as a guaranteed connection with your ferry.

A single bus fare is CAD 2 for adults, seniors and youth, and a DayPASS costs CAD 4. Children up to and including 12 travel free. The ferry crossing, the wait at the terminal and the bus add up to a longer day than the 40-minute sailing suggests, and there is no fixed door-to-door time from Vancouver. Once you are in Sechelt, the where to stay page shows which areas work well without a car.

By seaplane from Vancouver to Sechelt

A seaplane flies from Richmond (YVR South) to Porpoise Bay in about 20 minutes. YVR South is not the same place as the Vancouver downtown terminal, so check which terminal your ticket uses. The seaplane base is at 5764 Wharf Road.

Sechelt is a summer route, with service resuming on 26 June 2026. Fares start at CAD 108 one way for bookings made about 45 days ahead, with a limited number of seats. Do not assume winter flights, and check the current schedule before you go.

The municipal Sechelt Airport in Wilson Creek is a separate site from the seaplane dock at Porpoise Bay. For the bay itself, with its beach and trails, read the Porpoise Bay guide.

For most visitors, the car on the ferry is the simplest plan, because the parks, the inlet and Smuggler Cove are spread along the coast. If you travel without a car, walk on and use route 90 to reach Sechelt. The seaplane suits a short summer trip when the schedule matches your dates.

North of Sechelt, a second ferry runs from Earls Cove to Saltery Bay, with a scheduled crossing of 50 minutes. It is the way to Powell River, covered on the Powell River page.
