Princess Louisa Inlet at a glance

Princess Louisa Inlet is a marine park reached through Jervis Inlet from the Strait of Georgia. There are no public roads to it. You arrive by boat or by aircraft, which is why most visitors book a boat tour from Egmont or a seaplane combination instead of making their own way.

The inlet ends in a U-shaped valley with steep, forested walls. Chatterbox Falls drops into the water at its head. Plan the trip as a full outing, because the journey up the fjord is part of the experience.

For most visitors, the 5-hour boat trip is the simpler and cheaper way to see the inlet. Choose the 3-hour combination if you have only half a day and the budget. The minimum age on the boat trip is 4 years. The price of the combination differs by booking channel, so compare before you pay. Confirm dates for your own travel season, because trips are not guaranteed every day of the year.

Starting from Egmont

Both options leave from Egmont, north of Pender Harbour on Highway 101. Our Pender Harbour and Egmont page covers the village and the walk to Skookumchuck Narrows.

Getting to Egmont

Plan the drive up Highway 101 from Sechelt, or check how the ferry from Vancouver fits in on our getting there page.

Chatterbox Falls

Chatterbox Falls is the reason most people come. Its height is roughly 37 to 40 m (about 120 to 130 ft). The water drops through forest onto a rocky shore beside the green water of the inlet.

Paths and boardwalks near the falls add up to about 800 m, so most of your time on shore is a short walk rather than a hike.

Malibu Rapids: the entrance and the current

The narrow entrance to the inlet is called Malibu Rapids. Currents there run at 7–10 knots. Safe passage depends on the tide and the current on the day, and you cannot work it out from a general high or low tide time. If you travel with a tour operator, the skipper handles the timing. If you take your own boat, get current predictions for the day and do not guess.

This is the main reason we suggest a tour for anyone without experience of fast water. Our weather and best time to visit page helps you pick the season, and the Sunshine Coast tours page compares the other boat trips and day tours.

On shore: dock, camping and mooring

The park has campsites, toilets, a dock and mooring. The dock takes boats up to 17 m long, and in busy periods use can be limited to 72 hours. Check current camping and mooring fees before you go.

If you come on a tour you will have only a limited time on shore. If you arrive in your own boat and stay overnight, you can stay longer at the head of the inlet and see the granite and forest reflected in still water on a calm evening.

The seaplane and boat combination

The 3-hour combination pairs a boat trip with a seaplane flight, which is why it is shorter and costs more than the standard trip. One seaplane partner runs its Signature tour from Egmont from 15 June to 30 September 2026, so do not assume it runs in spring or late autumn.

The same trip is sold through more than one channel. Compare what is included before you choose, and ask about taxes and children's rates.

Wildlife and whale distances on the way

Orcas and humpback whales are sometimes seen on boat trips in these waters, but a sighting is luck, not a promise. Wildlife rules apply to any boat. Since 1 June 2026 the distance to Southern Resident killer whales is 1,000 m in the designated southern B.C. area. For other orcas it is 200 m, and for other whales, dolphins and porpoises 100 m, or 200 m if they are resting or have a calf. If you cannot tell which orca population you are looking at, keep 1,000 m away.

More on whales from the coast is in the whale watching guide on Roberts Creek.
